What is an Induction Massage?

An Induction massage a more holistic option.

So you’re at the pointy end of your pregnancy and you’re looking into different options to encourage your little bundle of joy to come join the world a little earlier and possibly reduce the duration and pain levels of childbirth. One highly popular option is currently seeing woman choosing to experience an induction massage.

Example of Induction Massage

Induction massage is similar to a pregnancy massage in that it is relaxing and non-invasive; however it differs with the stimulation of acupressure points on the body. So, I hear you asking what is acupressure?  I guess the easiest way to answer that is it’s similar to acupuncture. It’s basically applied pressure by using your fingertips, elbows and palms generally instead of needles on energy highways in your body, these energy highways are also known as a Meridians. Meridians are all internal like channels or highways that carry Qi (Chee) throughout the whole body. There are 12 standard meridian systems or energy highways in our body and they also correlate to a particular organ. These Meridians are as follows: Lung, Large Intestine, Stomach, Spleen, Heart, Small Intestine, Bladder, Kidney, Heart Governor, Triple Heater, Gall Bladder, and Liver.

Certain points are stimulated using acupressure to encourage the onset of labour. For example the L14 point is associated to the large intestine, it is located on the back of your hand deep between the webbing of your thumb and pointer, when you stimulate this point it also stimulates the large intestine, by stimulating this point it is believed to induce labour. The SP6 point which is used for many reasons one of them being labour induction, it can be found on the leg just above the ankle this point also helps improve spleen health. BL32 point is halfway between the lower spine and the dimple of you bottom when stimulated it is believed to spark contractions. BL60 is located at the top of your Achilles tendon behind the ankle. Stimulating this point is said to encourage labour and reduce labour pain. The principle of using acupressure in these meridians within the body is to clear any energy blockages allowing your energy to flow freely.

Other interesting points to consider are that this is purely natural as opposed to medical inductions that use synthetic substances to bring about labour. This type of massage also helps alleviate stress levels replacing them with the higher presence of endorphins, helping us feel happier.

Please note induction massages are not advised prior to 38 weeks and seek approval from your doctor or midwife prior to treatment.
